About Calape, Bohol

Calape is a peaceful coastal municipality located on the western coast of Bohol Province, approximately 41.4 kilometers from Tagbilaran City. Covering around 75.36 square kilometers and composed of 33 barangays, Calape is known for its rich cultural heritage, scenic islands, historical landmarks, and warm Boholano hospitality.

The Name “Calape” — The name is derived from the Cebuano word kalapi, referring to a type of rattan once abundant in the area, used for furniture, baskets, and handicrafts. Alternatively, the name is also believed to signify a traditional gathering place for traders and fishermen along the Bohol coast.

San Vicente Ferrer Parish Church
Heritage

San Vicente Ferrer Parish Church

Founded in 1802 and built between 1933 and 1954 by the Recollects, the San Vicente Ferrer Parish Church is Calape’s most treasured landmark. Its neo-Gothic coral stone architecture features lancet arches, rose windows, and distinctive spires. Officially declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines on May 9, 2023, the church complex includes a convent and belfry under the Diocese of Tagbilaran.

Pangangan Island and Causeway

Pangangan Island & Causeway

The 3.5-kilometer Pangangan Causeway is believed to be the longest causeway in the Philippines. Built by the local community after World War II as a symbol of resilience and unity, the causeway connects Pangangan Island to the Calape mainland. The island itself is accessible via this iconic structure and is home to beautiful beaches and a tight-knit island community.

Located in Pangangan Island and accessible via the causeway, Cielo Azul is celebrated for its white sand shoreline and crystal-clear blue waters — ideal for snorkeling and diving. Calunasan Dam (SRIP)

Inaugurated in September 2025, the Calunasan Small Reservoir Irrigation Project is one of Calape’s newest and most scenic landmarks. This ₱813-million zoned earth fill dam in Barangay Calunasan features a beautiful view deck, staircase, and railings overlooking calm reservoir waters. Surrounded by lush Bohol countryside, it has quickly become a favorite spot for picnics, photography, and breathtaking sunset views.

Calape Public Market

Every Thursday, the Calape Public Market transforms into a lively taboan — a bustling trading day. It overflows with fresh seafood hauled from the Bohol Sea, woven handicrafts, local delicacies like kalamay and peanut butter candy, and authentic Boholano products. Adjacent to the San Vicente Ferrer Church, the market is a vibrant hub of local commerce, culture, and daily life.

Historical Timeline

Pre-1600s

Pre-Colonial Settlement

A native settlement already existed in Calape when the Spaniards arrived in the 16th century. Early inhabitants were traders and fishermen, with the area named after the abundant kalapi rattan plant.

1802

Established as Municipality

The Spanish governor of Cebu established Calape as an independent municipality. First settlers included immigrants from Cebu and other municipalities across Bohol.

1933–1954

Church Construction

The San Vicente Ferrer Parish Church was built by the Recollects over two decades, surviving delays including the Philippine revolution. A story of resilience and community effort.

1943

The Calape Conference

On February 27, Calape hosted the historic conference that unified the Free Bohol Government against Japanese occupation, attended by future president Carlos P. Garcia.

1945

Liberation & Recovery

Calape was liberated from Japanese forces. The post-war community famously built the Pangangan Causeway by hand as a symbol of resilience and determination.

2023

National Cultural Treasure

The San Vicente Ferrer Parish Church was officially designated a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines on May 9, 2023.
